This slow-growing evergreen from southern Japan is related to the witch hazel, revealed by its red and purple, confetti-like flowers on 3-5cm long upright racemes in late spring and early summer. Handsome, vase-shaped, spreading habit with narrow, glossy, leathery dark-green leaves. Enjoys a sheltered spot in partial shade in well-drained soil. H4
