A slow to moderate growing very small tree or large shrub producing a fluttery, festive show of floppy flowers on bare stems in early spring. 'Royal Star' is a form which produces very large flowers which are pink in bud, opening to white, and flowers slightly later than the species, giving it added protection against late night frosts. Fairly tolerant of heavy clay, but avoid alkaline or chalky soils. H5
