A tree renowned for its spectacular scarlet autumn hues. Although the leaves are dark green in summer, its winter twigs have a red hue, as do its tiny spring flowers, which provide a cheery, if modest, second season of interest. The leaves themselves emerge in spring a pale yellow gradually darkening to green. Of North American origin, Acer rubrum has been cultivated in Europe since the 1600's. It grows on most soils in the UK, but rarely colours well on chalk or dry soils (Acer x freemanii makes a better choice for such sites). Windy positions should also be avoided. A shallow rooting tree.
