In its native North America this is a large and important timber tree. The wood formally had numerous uses including ship masts. Pyramidal when young, it matures to a broad oval habit with an irregular crown. Soft, 6-13cm long, bluish green needles that sway beautifully in the wind. Cylindrical, 10-20cm long, brown cones. Very hardy.
