The London plane is a vigorous tree, recognisable by its smooth, marbled grey bark, large leaves, and bauble-like fruits which persist through winter and into spring. Since it quite happily reshoots from old wood, it makes an excellent choice for training. Prune in early spring to rejuvenate and in summer to maintain shape. H6
